Ford Secures Decisive Victory in 7th Congressional District Race

by Kate D’Avignon

Voters in Illinois’ 7th Congressional District overwhelmingly elected La Shawn Ford on Nov. 3, marking a significant political transition for much of Chicago’s West Side. Ford will become the district’s first new representative in nearly three decades following the retirement of longtime Congressman Danny K. Davis.

The district encompasses Forest Park, Oak Park, Austin, Garfield Park, North Lawndale, downtown Chicago, and extends south to Englewood. Election results were projected roughly an hour after polls closed, with Ford commanding more than 88% of the vote early in the count. Republican challenger Chad Koppie received less than 12%.

Supporters gathered at XS Tennis Village on Chicago’s South Side to celebrate Ford’s victory. The event drew several prominent political figures, including Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and outgoing Congressman Danny Davis, both of whom congratulated Ford during the evening’s festivities.

Addressing supporters, Ford reflected on the significance of the moment and the responsibility that comes with representing the district. He acknowledged the longstanding leadership of Davis and emphasized his commitment to serving the communities of the 7th District.

The emotional transition between the two leaders was evident as Davis welcomed Ford to the stage after the race was called. The pair embraced and shared an emotional moment before supporters, symbolizing the passing of leadership after Davis’ nearly 30 years in Congress. Davis first won the seat in 1997 and announced his retirement earlier this year while endorsing Ford as his successor.

Prior to the close of polls, State Representative Camille Lilly praised Ford’s record of public service and his ability to bring together diverse constituencies. Having worked alongside him for more than a decade, Lilly expressed optimism about future collaboration among local, state, and federal leaders to address community needs throughout Illinois.

Community advocate and consultant Janeicia Williams also spoke during the celebration. Williams, who serves as executive director of The Austin Experience, credited Davis with helping shape her professional development and encouraging civic engagement on the West Side.

Williams noted that Ford now has an opportunity not only to continue Davis’ legacy of service but also to create pathways for future generations of leaders. While celebrating the election victory, she encouraged residents to remain involved in the civic process and continue the work of strengthening their communities beyond Election Day.
