MAYWOOD | A family with deep and abiding roots in the most famous black power organization has lost another family member.
The sister of black power revolutionist and former Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, Frances “Dee Dee” Hampton passed away on August 23, according to Frances’ brother Bill Hampton. She was 69.
Bill said that his sister was admitted to Loyola University Medical Center two days prior on August 21. Frances who recently moved into her brother’s home in Maywood had been suffering from a kidney infection.
In a Facebook post announcing her death, Bill wrote in memory of his sister, “Words cannot begin to express the sisterly love and support she has always given me, my family and friends over the many years. Thank you DeeDee for being my sister.”
Frances was the only sister of Bill and Fred, and the only daughter of Francis Allen and Iberia Hampton. According to Bill, she had been involved with the Fred Hampton Memorial Legal Assistance Scholarship Fund, an annual award that given to law students.
The Hampton matriarch, Iberia Hampton, died last year at age 95. Funeral plans for Frances Hampton are to be announced.
