PROVISO | The Proviso East and Proviso West boys track teams will be well-represented at this weekend’s Class 3A state meet in Charleston.
The Pirates finished fourth as a team at the tough Oak Park sectional last week, and ended up qualifying three relay teams and one individual for state.
Proviso East dominated the relay events, winning the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 meter races. In the 4×100, the team of seniors David Payne and Marzell Wells, along with juniors Moses Ikechu Biosah and Deonte Bryant, grabbed first place in a time of 43.80 seconds.
Biosah, Bryant, Payne and Wells also teamed up to take first in the 4×200 with a time of 1:32.54. Meanwhile, Biosah, Payne, senior Jon Sylvester and junior Emannual Valtierrez were victorious in the 4×400, clocking in at 3:24.47.
Sylvester motored to a sectional championship in the 300 low hurdles with a time of 40.63 seconds.
Proviso West took eighth place in the team standings out of 14 teams at the Lake Park sectional. Junior Justin Bruns is going to Charleston after winning the sectional championship in the 200 (22.36 seconds). Panthers senior Patrick Robinson Jr., who recently landed a football scholarship, jumped 42 feet, 6 ½ inches—good for second place in the triple jump and a trip downstate.
