Academy students
author, edit newly
published novel

FOREST PARK |  Kiran Gogana is a junior at Proviso
Mathematics and Science Academy and a part-time
employee at Jamba Juice. She’s also the author of the newly
published novel “A Love Story.”

Reading is one of Gogana’s favorite hobbies. She reads
every single day, mostly romance novels. Her favorite love
story is “Romeo and Juliet.” That play, written in the 1500’s by
William Shakespeare, inspired her to create her own love
story about pride, duties, her Indian culture, and how love
conquers all.

“I read everyday,” said Gogana. “I loved reading “Romeo and
Juliet.” Their story is so rare and it’s so special. I thought that
if I were to write my own book it should be based on their
story.”

Gogana began to write her first novel in December of 2008 as
a freshman at PMSA. She finished the book in March 2009,
and after talking with her parents, Gogana used resources
from PMSA’s library to search for publishing companies
interested in her project.     She also got three of her close
friends at PMSA involved. PMSA juniors Patty Graff and Frida
Sanchez edited her novel. PMSA junior Crystal Galloway was
the illustrator.

“I was talking with Patty, Frida, and Crystal one morning in the
cafeteria,” said Gogana. “I was telling them about my book.
Then they agreed to help. When I finished, I was like wow. I’ve
got to get this published. So I got approval from my parents.
Then I began to look for publishers.”

Trafford Publishing published “A Love Story” in November
2009. It is now available online at amazon.com. Gogana says
this novel is the first of more to come.

About the Book: Ruby is blessed with the perfect home, a
wonderful loving dad, and an awesome best friend name

for new outfits. Night comes and Ruby is left alone, waiting for
a bus to come. While waiting, Ruby gets harassed by a group
of goons and is forced to hide in an old warehouse. There,
she gets saved by a boy named Shia. During the one week
Kapoor party, Shia and Ruby fall in love and plan to be with
each other forever. Then, one day, Ruby’s dad makes an
announcement on stage. He tells everyone that Ruby is going
to get engaged to a boy that Ruby doesn’t love. Now Ruby
has to choose. Will she succumb to her father’s wishes or
will she go against everyone to follow her heart?
