Proviso | Proviso Township High Schools District 209 celebrated the
commencement of over 950 graduating students from the class of 2009 on May
24th and May 30th.
Proviso East High School awarded 304 diplomas to students who have been
offered over $1.9 million in college scholarships. Proviso East’s commencement
ceremony was held on Sunday, May 24th at 6:00 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion.
Proviso West High School awarded 542 diplomas to graduating students who
have brought in $2.1 million in college scholarships. Proviso West’s graduation
was also held on May 24th at the UIC Pavilion.
The district’s newest high school, Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy
held its first ever senior graduation of 106 students on Saturday, May 30th at
Dominican University. The seniors of PMSA have brought in over $5.8 million in
scholarships.
“This graduation day is a culmination of years of hard work, commitment, and
dedication,” said PMSA Principal Ed Moyer. “The accomplishment that this day
represents for both our students and staff is tremendous. It reflects the profound
efforts of everyone involved.”
PMSA opened its doors to the Proviso community in August of 2005 as a
selective enrollment public high school. The school is based on the magnet
school model featuring rigorous curriculum in math and sciences.
This year the Academy has celebrated many accomplishments as the newest
addition to PTHS 209. The school met/exceeded state requirements on its
Annual Yearly Progress Report (AYP), was ranked among he top fifty high
schools in the state of Illinois by the Chicago Tribune, and this year’s graduating
seniors raked in nearly $6 million dollars in college scholarships—including one
Gates Millennium Scholarship.
“This is exciting for our communities and our school district,” said PTHS 209
Board President Chris Welch. The board approved this bold step in 2005. “Not
long ago, the academy was a mere idea, now it has become a place full of great
minds, great thinkers, great educators, and remarkable students who are eager
to learn. Proviso East and Proviso West have always been Nihil Nisi Optimum
(Nothing but the Best) and PMSA has been a grand addition to amplify that
motto.”
Some PTHS Students will go on to some of the most prestigious colleges and
universities in the United States, according to school officials.
