Band still shy of fundraising goal for
Disney trip

MAYWOOD |  We’ve all seen the choir groups, baseball teams
and other organizations trying to raise money for a cool but
expensive trip out of town. Well, add the Proviso East High
School Jazz Band to that list.

The band has been invited, March 27, to participate in Disney
Magic Music Days at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

The band was selected from hundreds of applicants around the
nation.  “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students as it
gives them the exposure needed to garner college
scholarship,” said, band director, Reginald Wright Jr.
The Proviso East Jazz Band is a small group of twenty-five
students ranging from ages 14 – 17.  The band members perform
nationwide at various competitions, community events and school
sponsored events.

“The students are very dedicated to the program,” Wright said.
Band practice takes place after school hours, on weekends and
during spring break.

Since December local organization have held fundraisers and
requested the bands performance to help raise money for the
Disney trip.

“Our goal is to raise at least $25,000 for our Disney trip.”  Wright
added that the costs include transportation, 4 night
accommodations and hopper passes to Disney/Universal Theme
Parks plus meals.”

Rev. Jacques Conway hosted a live jazz performance fundraiser
on behalf of the band in January at Neighborhood United
Methodist Church in Maywood.  The event raised $1,000 in
donations, according to Conway.  The band also played at the
West Suburban Journal Gala in December which raised $500
toward the trip.

The exposure at Disney World is a benefit to the kids and their
future says Wright.  Over the past 17-years numerous members
of the Jazz Band have won scholarships.

Donations to the band can be made to PROTOSOMA, Inc. 2300
S. 18th Ave, Broadview, IL 60155, and are used to promote music
and art and education for students attending Proviso Township
High Schools.  For information call 708-202-1642
